Baileys_Logo.jpg (21497 bytes)COOKED CEREAL MEAL - NO.1
           Conditioning - Non-Heating - Digestible

Cooked Cereal Meal is the original product and foundation of Baileys Horse Feeds Complete Range of feeds.  It was the first truly 'non-heating' feed and has excellent conditioning properties

Today, Baileys Cooked Cereal Meal is made entirely from cooked wheat. It is a clean, palatable product that is designed to be fed as part of the concentrate ration for all types of horses and ponies requiring weight gain, at rest b4.gif (14516 bytes)or in work. Digestibility is maximised using the latest micronising technology so it is ideal for horses prone to digestive upsets and those recovering from surgery or an illness. The unique texture means it can be beneficial for older horses with poor dentition.

Concentrated Low moisture, low fibre - suitable for horses in hard work where reduced bulk is desirable.

Versatile Can be used as the basis for the concentrate ration, combined with other straights or fed with compound feeds.

FEEDING ADVICE

  • Introduce slowly, a handful at a time.
  • It must be fed damp and mixed with other ingredients.
  • Feed in conjunction with Baileys Vitamin Mineral supplement or Baileys Lo-Cal balancer pellets to ensure micro-nutrient levels are maintained.
  • Where Cooked Cereal Meal is replacing conventional grains (oats, barley etc) the quantity fed can often be reduced due to the increased digestibility.

TOP LINE CONDITIONING CUBES - NO.4
                 Conditioning - Non-Heating - Fully Balanced

Based on Cooked Cereal Meal, Top Line Conditioning Cubes are highly digestible, providing show ring condition and maintaining top line on horses prone to weight loss, especially those in hard work.  In addition to the energy content for weight gain, soya provides a quality protein source to promote muscle development. A high inclusion of  soya oil promotes excellent coat condition and increases the energy density of the feed

For horses that cannot tolerate traditional cereal grains, Top Line Conditioning Cubes provide optimum levels of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals for performance, making them ideal for working and competition horses that require a higher energy feed but in a non-heating form. Energy is channelled into useful physical work instead of creating wasteful nervous energy and a difficult mental attitude.

As Top Line Conditioning Cubes are low moisture and low fibre they are especially suitable for horses that require reduced bulk i.e. eventing, show jumping, driving, endurance etc.

The digestibility and high oil content of Top Line Conditioning Cubes makes them ideal for older horses and ponies or those recovering from surgery or illness that require weight gain.

Top Line Conditioning Cubes can be used for weight gain and condition for all types of horses and ponies, at rest or in work.

LO-CAL -  NO. 14
Low Calorie - Nutrient Dense - Balancer

Lo-Cal is formulated to balance forage or 'top dress' hard feed. It contains a concentrated supply of quality protein, vitamins and minerals without significant carbohydrate levels and is ideal for overweight horses and ponies, those prone to laminitis and horses on box rest that require very little concentrate feed. Feeding Lo-Cal will provide the nutrients required for a balanced diet without overloading the system with energy. Lo-Cal contains yeast culture for improved fibre digestion and gut function and the inclusion of chelated minerals increases absorption and utilisation of the nutrients.

The comprehensive balance of nutrients includes lysine, biotin, methionine and zinc and promotes a healthy coat and strong hooves, maintains condition, improves muscle tone and promotes general overall well-being. Excellent results have been seen with horses on box rest when muscle tone and definition is often lost due to the lack of exercise and a reduction in hard feed.

Lo-Cal is also of particular benefit for providing optimum levels of essential nutrients for the working or competition horse to maximise performance. It is especially important if the horse is being fed reduced quantities of performance feeds to prevent over conditioning, or when the horse is in hard work but only being fed a low energy feed. A low energy feed will also have lower levels of other essential nutrients such as protein, vitamins and minerals which are vital for efficient muscle function and normal metabolism.

The yeast culture is also very relevant for the performance horse as it will help maintain gut function which can be affected if the horse is stressed, working hard and travelling frequently

I N G R E D I E N T S

Grass Meal, Distillers Grains, Wheatfeed, Micronised Soya, Dicalcium Phosphate, Molasses, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin Mineral Premix, Yeast Culture, Lysine, Methionine.

FEEDING ADVICE

•    Lo-Call can be fed on its own to balance forage, or in addition to an existing concentrate ration.

•    Horses on box rest may benefit from the addition of an alfalfa chaff.

•    Ensure adequate forage (grass/hay) is available.

•    When in work and feeding Lo-Cal the sole concentrate ration, increase the daily quantity by 1/2 lb. per day whatever size of the horse or pony

BUCKEYE GRO'N WIN
Low Calorie - Nutrient Dense - Broodmares and Youngstock

Gro'n Win is a nutrient dense pellet formulated by Buckeye Equine Nutrition in America to meet the increased nutritional requirements of pregnant and lactating mares, foals and youngstock. Buckeye have been studying the importance of major minerals, vitamins and trace elements in the development of foals and youngstock for many years. Gro'n Win contains vitamins and minerals that are essential to counteract deficiencies commonly found in forages and cereal grains. It is ideal for mares and youngstock that maintain weight and condition on forage alone. The protein quality is excellent with soya providing essential amino acids including lysine, methionine and tryptophan which are important for muscle development and muscle function.

Gro'n Win is extremely versatile as the recommended quantity can be fed as the sole concentrate ration or mixed with straights such as oats, barley or Baileys Cooked Cereal Meal when more calories for weight gain are required. Alternatively, a proportion of the daily amount of Gro'n Win can be replaced with Baileys Stud Mix or Stud Cubes when needing to increase the calorie content of the diet whilst still maintaining the other nutrients at optimum levels. For every 3 lbs. of Stud Mix or Cubes introduced to the diet, reduce Gro'n Win by 1 lb.

I N G R E D I E N T S

Soyabean Meal, Micronised Soya Beans, Distillers Grains, Cooked Cereal Meal, Whey, Grass Meal, Molasses, Vitamin Mineral Premix.

FEEDING ADVICE

For foals and yearlings that are growing rapidly or experiencing developmental problems, feeding an additional 1/2 1b of Gro'n Win per day should be beneficial.

Gro'n Win can be introduced from 3 months of age, increasing the quantity by 1/2 lb. each month until 6 months. If feeding a milk based creep feed such as Buckeye Foal Starter, this should be decreased from 3 months so it is out of the diet by 4 -5 months.

b35.gif (16372 bytes)b36.gif (12883 bytes) STUD MIX - NO. 7
Premium Quality - Fully Balanced - Palatable

Stud Mix is a fully balanced and palatable mix formulated for pregnant and lactating broodmares, foals and youngstock. The blend of traditional cereal grains combined with Buckeye Gro'n Win provides a premium quality stud feed, particularly in terms of protein quality and mineral density that are vital for optimum growth and development.

Stud Mix was developed in conjunction with Buckeye Equine Nutrition in the USA using the latest research data and allowing for the nutritional contribution made by forage.

Although foals will pick at their mother's Stud Mix, it is not recommended as a creep feed for foals under 3 months of age as they cannot efficiently digest it. A milk based creep feed such as Buckeye Foal Starter is preferable. If the quantity of Stud Mix is reduced for a mare or youngster carrying too much body weight, replace every 3 lbs. of Stud Mix with 1 lb. of Gro'n Win

Introduce foals to Stud Mix/Cubes from 3 months of age and reduce milk based creep feed gradually, increasing the Stud Mix/Cubes by 1112 IBS per month until 6 months of age.

For those youngsters holding plenty of condition Gro'n Win Ration Balancer can be fed to replace all, or a proportion of, Stud Mix/Cubes.

BUCKEYE FOAL-AIDE
Trace Mineral and Vitamin Supplementation - Convenient to use

A vitamin and trace mineral drench or paste for suckling foals. It is particularly beneficial for supplementing the trace mineral levels when a mare is producing a large volume of milk of low quality.

Foal-Aide is suitable for rapidly growing foals that require additional vitamins and trace minerals without the extra carbohydrate levels usually found in traditional creep feeds. It helps reduce the incidence of nutrition related growth problems often due to the natural decline in mares' milk quality.

FEEDING ADVICE

Foal-Aide can be used from one week of age. Continue until the foal is consuming the recommended quantities of a weanling ration i.e. Buckeye Gro'n Win, Baileys Stud Mix. Foal-Aide should not be given to foals over 6 months of age.

b40.gif (13315 bytes)b41.gif (13275 bytes) BUCKEYE FOAL STARTER
Milk Based - Highly Digestible - Palatable

Foal Starter is a palatable, milk based creep feed formulated for foals up to 3 months of age. It is especially beneficial if the mare is not milking well, to top up the nutrient levels lacking in the milk supply.

The quality of the mare's milk declines naturally as lactation progresses. Research shows that between 3 and 5 weeks into lactation the mineral levels in mares' milk will drop between 40% - 60%. Foal Starter will ensure that essential minerals will be maintained at a level to support correct growth.

The oat sized pellets are palatable and highly digestible, aiding the transition from mares' milk to hard feed. The precise blend of milk products and cooked ingredients ensures efficient utilisation of the available nutrients by the developing digestive tract of the foal.

I N G R E D I E N T S

Micronised Soya. Cooked Cereal Meal, Dried Whey Distillers Grains, Molasses, Soya Oil, Vitamin Mineral Premix.

FEEDING ADVICE

As soon as the foal shows an interest in eating hard feed make Foal Starter available. Typical foals can consume 1 lb. (0.45kg) of Foal Starter per 100 lbs. (45kgs) of bodyweight.

Change gradually onto a balanced weanling ration, i.e. Baileys Stud Mix, Stud Cubes or Buckeye Gro'n Win, from 3 months of age to coincide with the changes in the digestive tract.

b50.gif (17859 bytes) NATIONAL HUNT MIX - NO. 16
Fully Balanced - With Oats - Contains Yeast Culture

A quality mix formulated to suit the feeding practices and training methods used for National Hunt and Point-to-Point horses.

Baileys National Hunt Mix provides the nutrients required to satisfy the demands of training and ensure optimum muscle function without creating excess bodyweight. The mix contains a blend of oats, micronised cereals, oils and a fibre based concentrate pellet which is specifically designed to satisfy the nutritional requirements and work intensity of the mature National Hunt horse and Point-to-Pointer.

The combination of energy sources - fibre, oil and carbohydrates, allows for slow releasing energy substrates to be combined with the more readily available carbohydrates (starch and sugars) to promote maximum utilisation of the diet but helping to prevent starch overload.

All essential amino acids such as lysine, methionine and tryptophan are provided and the minerals are chelated to promote their availability for good muscle development and function and for maintaining strong bones. A full vitamin and mineral profile, including B vitamins, ensures maintenance of performance, hoof quality, coat condition and appetite through efficient utilisation of the overall diet.

Yeast has been proven to benefit gut function and increase efficiency of fibre digestion in the hind gut and is therefore ideal for horses receiving large volumes of concentrate feed daily, travelling regularly and under stress.

I N G R E D I E N T S

Concentrate Pellets (containing Chelated Minerals, Vitamins and Yeast), Bruised Oats, Micronised Barley, Molasses, Micronised Maize, Micronised Peas, Soya Oil.

FEEDING ADVICE

  • Introduce gradually, working up to approximately 16-18 lbs. (7-8kg) per day at peak fitness.
  • Adjust feeding quantities according to changes in body condition and work intensity. When feeding high volumes of concentrate feed, dividing the feed into a minimum of 3-4 feeds per day is recommended. Small, more frequent meals promote efficient utilisation of the diet and reduce the risks of digestive disturbances (e.g. colic, scouring) from grain overload.
  • Where cubes are the preferred feeding choice rather than oat based grain mixes, National Hunt Mix can be replaced by Baileys No. 11 Racehorse Cubes.
  • For horses prone to weight loss or those receiving less than 14-16 lbs. per day at peak fitness use No. 10 Racehorse Mix or No. 11 Racehorse Cubes.
  • If not in full work or on box rest, cut the feed down to a maintenance ration.

BUCKEYE EQUINE ENERGY
       SUPPLEMENTARY FEED
Energy Dense - For Improving Stamina and Endurance

Equine Energy is a palatable blend of vegetable oils, micronised grains, vitamins and minerals formulated to maximise performance by delaying the onset of fatigue. Extensive research has demonstrated that the inclusion of fats and oils in the diet creates a 'glycogen sparing' effect. Fat stores are utilised at low intensity work sparing the glycogen stores, the main energy source for muscle function, for when the work intensity increases. The proportion of the various fatty acids (including Omega 3 fatty acids) and their ratios to each other is now known to be important in the performance of the fat supplement, rather than just the total amount of oil or fat present in the diet.

Feeding Equine Energy allows the energy density of the ration to be increased without significantly increasing the volume of feed which is ideal for horses with limited appetites.

Cooking the ingredients in Equine Energy gelatinises the starch, making it available for absorption in the horse's foregut. Low feeding levels combined with improved digestibility, reduces the likelihood of digestive upsets occurring, which is particularly beneficial for horses in hard work consuming large volumes of concentrates.

Equine Energy is a small extruded nugget that is palatable mixes well with the main ration and is fortified with vitamins and minerals to promote efficient utilisation of the oil in the diet.

Equine Energy is a non-heating energy source that will help maintain condition. It is ideal for excitable horses that drop condition easily, competition and performance horses that require energy for work but can get over exuberant on traditional cereal diets and for any individuals who would benefit from improved stamina.

Suitable for Dressage, Driving, Endurance, Eventing, Harness Racing, Hunting, Polo, Ponies, Racing, Sales Preparation, Showing, Weight Gain.

Show'n Win is a palatable blend of vegetable oils, with complementary vitamins and minerals, formulated to be fed in addition to a balanced concentrate feed. The inclusion of spearmint increases palatability and adds interest to the diet.

The blend of oils in Show'n Win provides the horse with a higher level of Omega 3 fatty acids, beneficial for the skin and coat and for improving muscle function and weight gain, giving an overall appearance of well-being.

It has the advantage over pure vegetable and other oils of having vitamins, minerals and electrolytes added to complement the high fat level, essential for efficient utilisation of the fat in the diet.

The processing of the grains gelatinises the starch making it available for absorption in the horse's fore-gut which, coupled with a slower rate of passage through the gut, helps reduce digestive upsets. The energy density of the ration enables the horse to consume smaller quantities of hard feed yet maintain bodyweight. This is ideal for horses with limited appetites. If an increase in weight and condition is required, Baileys No. 1 Cooked Cereal Meal or No.4 Top Line Conditioning Cubes fed alongside Show'n Win are beneficial.

The inclusion of fats and oils in the diet as a non-heating energy source has also been shown to increase the endurance of horses and reduce recovery times after hard work.

PERFORM ' N WIN

An advanced formula premium electrolyte from Buckeye Nutrition

It is important to replace water and body salts (sweat) lost during work in hot and humid weather conditions. Prolonged exercise can result in dehydration, decreased performance, fatigue, heat stress, gastro-intestinal dysfunction, muscle cramping or tying up and even death. Maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance is vital for optimum performance and research has shown that fluid and body salt losses change according to the duration and stress of work. Perform'n Win is formulated to be administered to those principles i.e. period and intensity of work. The formulation of Perform'n Win is based on over three years of research, using more than 300 performance horses, at the internationally respected University of Guelph Equine Research Centre. The most dramatic finding was that the period of time prior to the onset of fatigue increased by an incredible 22.7% in horses given Perform 'n Win before exercise. Perform'n Win is given according to a formula which is based on the hours of work by a healthy performance horse.

Some horses may take time to adapt to drinking water containing electrolytes. If this is the case, it is best to provide two sources of water, one with the electrolyte and one without. Most horses, once accustomed to electrolytes, will choose to drink the water with the electrolyte.

If a horse is reluctant to drink, providing electrolytes in another form (i.e. feed, syringe etc.) will help replenish electrolyte losses and increase the horse's thirst. However, it is essential that fluid (water, damp feed etc) is given in order to ensure effective absorption of the electrolytes.

Electrolytes given with insufficient fluid could increase the risk of dehydration.

Do not feed to sick horses unless advised by your vet.

GARLIC

Garlic is an ancient herbal remedy that has traditionally been used as a natural antibiotic, as an aid to digestion and to provide relief for some respiratory problems. It is also an effective insect repellent.

Baileys Garlic Supplement combines powerful natural garlic oil with nutritious and easily digestible ingredients to create a palatable powder that mixes well with any feed, keeps well and is easy to use all year round.

Available in 1kg and 5kg tubs.

VITAMIN MINERAL SUPPLEMENT

A top quality, high specification, broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement for working horses. When used at the recommended rates this supplement, which contains optimum levels of essential nutrients, will help to counteract the deficiencies commonly found in traditional cereal diets.

Although vitamins and minerals are not required in large quantities, they are needed for correct function of nearly all the body processes and a deficiency or excess of any one can have wide ranging effects, such is the diversity of their interaction. It is not recommended to mix supplements or to exceed the stated dose.

If feeding a quality compound feed (mix or cube), additional supplementation should not be necessary unless advised by your vet. However, if feeding less than the recommended levels of a compound feed, or the compound feed is being 'diluted' with straights (oats, barley, Cooked Cereal Meal etc), use the supplement at half the recommended dose.

When feeding broodmares and youngstock, ration balancers specifically formulated for growth and development, such as Buckeye Gro'n Win, would be more suitable.

Available in a 3kg tub.

LIMESTONE FLOUR

Limestone Flour is a natural and convenient source of the important mineral calcium. Calcium plays several roles in equine health and fitness, but is primarily associated with the development and maintenance of bone, hoof and hair tissue.

Many of the traditional cereal feeds are deficient in calcium and the degree of supplementation required is dependent on the ingredient being fed. When feeding broodmares or youngstock, consider specialised ration balancers such as Buckeye Gro'n Win to complement straights or traditional grains.

Good quality compound feeds will be correctly balanced and should not require any additional supplementation.

Available in a 3kg tub.

HARVEST SALT BLOCKS

Salt and mineral blocks for the free choice feeding of salt, fortified with essential minerals including high levels of copper and selenium to complement the concentrate feed. Formulated by Buckeye Nutrition, USA to help meet the horse's mineral requirements, especially broodmares and youngstock.

Each Harvest Salt Block is 10kg and ideal for outdoor paddock use.

Do not feed to sheep due to high copper content.

FEEDING THE WORKING HORSE

The conformation of the horse is fundamental to its ability to perform. Nutrients supplied by the diet provide the building blocks from which the horse's structure is developed. Amino acids are the sub-units of protein which form tissues. Certain amino acids have to be supplied in the diet as the horse can not synthesise them himself. As the horse is worked he will gradually lay down new tissue which from the outside is seen as muscle tone and definition. As the horse gets fitter he becomes stronger and his capability to perform should be improved.

Youngsters requiring condition

Establishing a sound framework in the early stages of training will prepare the horse for the more rigorous demands of a competitive career. The correct diet combined with an appropriate training regime should produce a fit and strong horse.

Two and three year olds, frequently imported from the Continent and Ireland, often lack condition. Buckeye Gro'n Win is a nutrient dense pellet that can be added to the ration to provide a concentrated supply of protein, vitamins and minerals for correct growth and development.

The young horse will often begin his working career whilst requiring weight gain. No.4 Top Line Conditioning Cubes provide a non-heating energy source and are very effective at promoting weight gain and condition. The oil content in the cubes increases the energy density of the feed without the use of cereals that can affect some horses' behaviour. The soya in the cubes provides a quality protein source to promote muscle development.

Feeding good doers

A common trait in Warmbloods and Natives is their ability to maintain condition. Horses in work require energy to perform but without promoting weight gain.

A concentrated source of protein, vitamins and minerals, such as Lo-Cal, can form the basis to the diet. Fats and oils are useful for improving stamina but they are very energy dense so should be used in moderation for a horse that tends to put on weight.

Lazy horses

It is important that the amount of feed reflects the level of work the horse is doing. If the horse receives more energy than he requires he will store the surplus as fat, which will make the work harder and even less appealing. No.6 Performance Mix combines cereals such as oats, barley and maize to provide a high energy feed with a reduced fibre content. This reduces the bulk in the hard feed, providing a more concentrated energy source in a smaller volume of feed.

Excitable horses

Some horses are very sensitive to temperament changes when on hard feed. No.2 Working Cubes are an excellent non-heating ration, providing the correct balance of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals for horses in light to medium work. Also suitable is No. 13 Oat-Free, a palatable non-heating mix with micronised barley, peas and maize. For the horse in hard work No.4 Top Line Conditioning Cubes provide a non-heating energy source. The oil content increases the energy density without the use of cereals that can affect some horses' behaviour.

Improving strength and stamina

Stamina can be improved by including fats and oils in the diet. The horse can be conditioned to utilise fat stores rather than glycogen stores when working at low intensities. If the glycogen stores are spared for longer the onset of fatigue will be delayed. This helps to reduce recovery times and is particularly beneficial for horses competing or working hard on successive days. Buckeye Equine Energy is a palatable blend of vegetable fats and oils with added vitamins and other essential nutrients for optimum utilisation to provide a non-heating form of concentrated energy.

Why Baileys? The best for service, quality and performance
Baileys_Logo.jpg (21497 bytes)

The beginning ...

Baileys Horse Feeds started in 1982 with the launch of Baileys No.1 Cooked Cereal Meal. This unique product pioneered the 'non heating' rations commonly available today. Since then Baileys has become a leading horse feed manufacturer in the UK, with nationwide distribution as well as an increasing demand from Europe, the Middle East and the Far East.

Latest research ...

Baileys international links are further enhanced by the established association with Buckeye Feed Mills B1.gif (5518 bytes)Inc. of Ohio, USA. In 1989, Buckeye appointed Baileys sole European Agents for Buckeye Gro'n Win Horse and Foal Ration Balancer and related products.

This relationship has developed over the years to offer the consumer feeds manufactured using the latest American research. Buckeye have been studying the importance of major minerals, vitamins and trace elements in the development of foals and youngstock and the performance horse for many years and they continue to implement improvements in formulations as and when results from research have proven effective.

Quality ...

Compound feed is formulated to complement the horse's daily forage intake, as forage alone is not sufficient to meet all horses' nutritional requirements.

Compound feeds are designed for different work loads and types of horses - hence the need for so many different feeds. Baileys feeds are a convenient and easy way to feed using consistent, quality ingredients and providing increased digestibility and bio-availability of nutrients.

The key to producing such high quality and consistent feeds is to use the best quality ingredients available. These are then processed to optimise absorption and utilisation by the horse.

Baileys feeds will typically contain cereals, protein sources, cereal by-products, fibre sources, molasses, oils, vitamins and minerals resulting in a cube, pellet or coarse mix. When formulating rations, the key points we consider are quality, quantity, palatability, cost and availability of raw materials to ensure that the feeds are produced to consistent formulations. The declared ingredients are printed on the bag so you know exactly what you are giving your horse.

Continued investment in the mill means that we can manufacture products that continue to meet our strict quality requirements and provide optimum levels of nutrition for your horse.

RULES OF FEEDING

Feed little and often

The horse is a herbivore and has a digestive system designed to function most efficiently when supplied with a fairly continuous supply of food. The horse's stomach capacity is limited and so only requires small amounts of feed at a time. Feeding too much quickly overloads the stomach and can result in digestive upsets such as colic.

Feed a balanced diet

It is important to identify the individual requirements of each horse or pony and provide them with a balanced diet to meet their needs.

Feed at regular intervals

Try to feed your horse or pony at regular intervals so that the digestive system is not empty for long periods of time. The flow of nutrients from the digestive system to the rest of the body will be consistent and will help avoid fluctuations that could disrupt normal metabolism.

Use a good quality feed

Forage should have a low dust content to reduce the risk of respiratory disease. Using poor quality concentrate feed can result in poor performance and is uneconomical as more feed is required to provide the horse with sufficient nutrients.

Avoid making sudden changes to the diet

The horse's digestive system contains different species of micro-organisms which are responsible for aiding the digestion of certain feeds. If the diet is changed suddenly the organisms needed to digest the new feed are not present in sufficient numbers to do so. Feed can then pass through the system undigested and can cause digestive upsets such as colic. it is therefore important to introduce new feed slowly over a period of 7 to 10 days.

Forage is essential

Fibre is essential for maintaining normal gut function and promoting efficient utilisation of concentrates. The concentrate ration should complement the forage available to the horse.

Allow time after feeding before working a horse

When a horse is exercised its lungs will expand to take in more oxygen. If the stomach is full of feed it will cause resistance against the pressure of the expanding lungs. This results in reduced lung capacity and premature emptying of the stomach, allowing partially digested food to move through the system. This can again result in digestive upsets such as colic.

Look after your feed

Store your feed in a clean, dry container to keep it fresh and to avoid contamination from pests. This will ensure your feed lasts longer and is appetising to your horse.

Keep buckets and mangers clean

All uneaten food should be removed and disposed of. Old feed that is left around the edge of buckets and mangers quickly becomes stale and will smell, discouraging the horse from eating.

ESTIMATION OF FEED REQUIREMENTS

These quantities are a basic guide and should be adjusted to suit the individual.

All horses should be fed according to bodyweight, not height, and will require approximately 2% of their bodyweight as feed per day in order to maintain condition (this includes concentrates and forage). Ideally, forage should be fed to appetite to promote healthy gut function.

To estimate the bodyweight, measure the girth around the horse's barrel (just behind the withers and in the girth groove) when the horse is relaxed and as he breathes out - see right.
